Current Events

My elder daughter, Thing 1, was given a school assignment to find an article in a newspaper or magazine, cut it out, read it, and write a summary of it. She found an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about the current salmonella crisis here in the US, which is both current and local, seeing as how the source of much of the outbreak is a peanut processing plant here in Georgia.

I found, what I believed, was an even better article. A story in the sports section about our favorite hockey team beating our hated cross-river rivals.

Thing 1 took a look at the story, smiled, nodded her head, and said, "I'm totally changing it to write about this story instead."

If Thing 1 can spread the gospel to a group of 4th Graders that the NY Rangers suck, then I've done my job as a parent.

Interesting how the benchmark has changed since the days of keeping them off the pole.

  2. That's worthy of a Father of the Year nomination right there!

  3. I would imagine this not translating too well to Aussie, but if a small part of you dies when NZ beats the Wallabies in Rugby, then you know how I feel when the Rangers beat my Devils.

  4. I completely understnd where you are coming from with this and I am gratified to see that your daughter is now tackling the big issues!

And we can handle losing to the Ewe-turners at rugger - but God forbid we lose to them at cricket - The current 5 match series stands at 2 each - final game Friday.

    Congrats on the Shutout

  5. Go the Aussies! I hope they can pull it out....although your writing is fantastic when you're on the edge of suicide over the Aussie's defeat at the hands of the Kiwis.

  6. Oh, and I meant the ice hockey references not translating too well. I fully know that the Aussies can take a heartbreaking loss to a rival as deeply as any American, if not more.

  7. Ice Hockey... isn't that a fight interrupted by the occasional playing of a game?

  8. You are such a good dad, Steve.....

  9. Al, not so much anymore. And never at the international level (fighting gets you ejected, whereas in North America, it's 5 minutes in the penalty box, aka the Sin Bin). It's an incredibly fast game that for the most part rewards skill/finesse much more than sheer brawn.

Andi, it's important to show the world how there is no end to our loyalty for our favorite hockey team.

  10. There is nothing like heartbreaking losses to make the victories sweeter! My best wishes to the Devils in their season. I note that they are 8-2 from their last ten games. May their streak continue - it is, even as a foreigner, tough to dislike a team called the Devils.

  11. Even more impressive is they've done this with a backup goalie....our hall of fame starting goalie has been injured since October with a torn bicep. You'd like that goalie, Marty Brodeur. He once slept with his brother's estranged wife.

And google Bobby Holik, the Devils' 3rd line center. He could be Frankenstein's less handsome younger brother.

  12. Holik does have a face like a bucketful of arseholes - I googled Brodeur too. Was it his brother-in-law's wife? Or is it another episode. B-I-L's wife is ok. Brother's wife = not so good. But, he seems like a legend. I'll have to find out when they televise these games. There is some ice hockey on cable over here - I've just never understood it.

Cricket looks like a wash out - Damn there eyes!

  13. If it's the Aussie professional league, you're not likely to see a high-quality form of the sport, but if you're seeing it piped in from Canada, for all the North American ex-pats, then you'll see the good stuff.

One hint: Don't worry about following the puck, no camera man is good enough to always catch it. Look for the crowd of guys skating towards the puck, that's where the action (and collisions) will be. Too many people say they don't like hockey because they can't follow the puck.
